Cooking with Kids: No Screens Required

Apr 24, 2013

Spending time together is just one of the benefits of having kids in the kitchen with you and a way to remain screen-free. It's also a chemistry lesson, a math lesson and counts as a life skill or handicraft!
Today is Day #8 of "Screen-Free Family Activities". I hope you're enjoying this series. I'm enjoying writing it. (And boy is it making me work my brain for ideas!)

Let's talk cooking.

Love it? Hate it? I guess it doesn't matter since we really have no choice in the matter. So why not enjoy it?

Cooking With Kids

My 10-year-old loves to help in the kitchen. She enjoys cutting veggies (supervised of course!) and frying chicken. I can't say I enjoy cooking, but I don't dislike it. It's like breathing: I just do it.

I do enjoy cooking with Lorelai because she enjoys it.

This another bonding activity (see handicrafts post) in which you can share a skill and building memories with your child. And guess what.. no screens allowed!

Now, I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never had a T.V. in the kitchen. I do often have my phone in the kitchen for reading a recipe. So I'd say that is allowed. It's not being used for entertainment after all. It's certainly more eco-friendly to save recipes in bookmarks or onto your Ziplist than to print them.

Spending time together is just one of the benefits of having kids in the kitchen with you. It's also a chemistry lesson, a math lesson and counts as a life skill or handicraft! If you're very creative, you can turn it into a Geography lesson using International recipes
