My Child Is Taking Charge of Her Life

Nov 24, 2013

In my life this week...

This was a great week.

Due to her own efforts, Lorelai was able to switch her sleeping schedule around to a more normal schedule. I say "more normal" because I think most of us would consider 4 a.m . a pretty early hour. Yet this is what time she gets up now. Her schedule goes something like this:

  • 4 a.m. - Wake up.
  • 5 a.m. - Breakfast
  • 10 a.m. - Lunch
  • 3:30 p.m. - Dinner
  • 5 p.m. - Get ready for bed
  • 6:30 p.m. - Bed
No one planned it, but it worked out this way. It's perfect for her. She gets to be up at night (it's dark between 4 and 7 a.m.), yet she experiences daylight, sunshine, fresh air and outdoor activities again.

The change in her moods and even her thinking is phenomenal. Yes, there will be a post about that. Stay tuned!

Also, Alexis came home after spending a month at one of my older daughter's home. I've missed her and am glad to have her back home.

In our homeschool this week...

Since I finally have Lorelai up in the day, I've taken full advantage of it. We didn't spend a lot of time on book lessons this week. Instead, we spent our time doing things we haven't been able to do for a long time.

  • We went to the park and library - twice.
  • We built LEGO ships.
  • We read books together at the park.
  • We joined our homeschool group for a museum field trip followed by playing at the park.
  • We played catch-up on our house which was falling far behind because we were only up 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. for the last month.
It was a fabulous week!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Today, we'll be attending the Festival of the Arts. If things continue the way they are going, I think we'll be able to attend at least one field trip and one library-and-park day each week. Won't that be great? I'm excited to be able to go out in the day!

My favorite thing this week was…

...seeing Lorelai happy. Not only was she happy with her achievement, but she was simply happy. If you understand bipolar disorder, you know that happiness is ever-elusive, even during "happy" times. Depression eats at them constantly. Not this week. She was genuinely and thoroughly happy. That was my favorite thing.

My kiddo's favorite thing this week was…

..the day we went on the field trip to the rock and mineral museum and to the park with the homeschool group. That evening she was full of hugs for me coupled with excited statements about what a great day she had. It was beautiful.

  2. Her schedule sounds a lot like my ideal schedule! If it were up to me I'd be up by 4 and in bed before 8 every day. Unfortunately, my family of night-owls has different feelings on the matter. I'm glad she's hitting a good stride and finding what works for her!
