An Overview of Charlotte Mason Homeschooling

Charlotte Mason Homeschooling an 18-week course designed to teach homeschooling parents how to use the Charlotte Mason method.

In this book you will learn:

  • Who Charlotte Mason was.
  • Reasons for implementing the Charlotte Mason method.
  • How to apply short lessons, narration, copywork and dictation.
  • Step-by-step instructions for teaching all subjects from math and foreign language to history and artist study.
  • What a Charlotte Mason homeschool schedule looks like.
This is the first book on Charlotte Mason homeschooling to actually teach a parent, in bite-size bits, how to actually apply the method to their own homeschool.

How It Works

In line with Charlotte Mason's use of short lessons, the chapters in this book are short. In each chapter, which are laid out by topic (short lessons, copywork, habit training, etc.), you'll find:
  • A brief yet thorough description of one facet of the CM method
  • An easy-to-understand explanation of how to implement that aspect of the method.
  • Cindy's personal experience, some resources or other supporting information.
  • Homework - short directives for practicing what you've learned.
The chapters are also sprinkled with Charlotte Mason quotes. Great inspiration from the teacher herself!

My Thoughts on Charlotte Mason Homeschooling

This book makes learning how to use the Charlotte Mason method very simple. If you've been confused or overwhelmed about how to get started, book is the answer.

I wish I'd had this book 5 years ago. I spent a good year or so trying to figure out everything. Imagine learning how to use the Charlotte Mason method in just one semester rather than a year or two!

I've been using the CM method for years, but I really appreciated this book as a reminder of how easy and worthwhile it is.

  1. Would this be good to get to use for kindergarten or should I wait to read and implement when my child is in first grade?

    1. Great question, Julia! I did use the CM method in Lorelai's kindergarten year. We studied artists, Shakespeare, history - everything, as a family. She did copywork (mostly ABCs and such) to learn writing skills. This book would be highly beneficial for getting a good educational start.

Of course, the younger years should be mostly about play and exploration which is why this method works so well. In her Kindergarten year, we spent 1 hour a day on lessons. (10 mins each subject).

Is it too late to start the CM method if your child is in 8th grade?
