A couple of ideas to help you include art across your homeschool curriculum. www.apassionledlife.com

Including art as a subject is the most logical step when attempting to add art to your homeschool. But did you know you can include art in your other homeschool subjects? You can.

Just how would you do this?

Use notebooking to add art to your homeschool subjects.

One way to include art across your curriculum is to use notebooking in your homeschool. Not only are notebooking pages an excellent evaluation tool, but they also allow your child to document her knowledge through writing and drawing. Whether your child is studying geography, learning about American presidents, or developing their character, you can include art in her lessons with notebooking.

Three ways to include art in your nature studies

Nature is art in it's highest form. Our Creator is the supreme artist and has given us so many pieces of artwork to enjoy. From sunsets to the tiniest creatures, we can find beauty everywhere.

1. Creative nature walks is one way to include art in your nature studies. Not only do nature walks cover the sciences, but they also cover other curriculum subjects.

2. Nature studies can help you delve even deeper into subjects. If you're having trouble understanding nature studies, I recommend Shining Dawn Books. These are cross-curriculum nature studies in the form of a unit study. Art included!

3. Keep a nature journal. Notebooking pages can be used for this, but I also recommend keeping a nature journal. In a nature journal, your child can glue leaves, draw pictures of things observed, and keep track of their thoughts and lessons learned. The possibilities for what to keep in a nature journal are endless!

I recommend using a mixed media journal so that the child can draw, use water colors, chalk pastels or whatever medium they choose to use for art.

  1. I wish I'd have home schooled my son instead of High School, it's not as common in the UK as in USA.

  2. We do a lot of art related to what we're learning in history. Greek pottery, things like that.

    1. I'll admit it wasn't the most natural thing for me either. Fortunately, I've learned much from Charlotte Mason and my own kids. (They're a bunch of artists.)

  5. These are great ideas! We are big believers in using a mixed media journal for nature study! My son also keeps an art journal to sketch out scenes from our history lessons.

  6. We have done a lot of art in our nature journals over the years. Drawing things from nature helps the kids to focus on details that are otherwise overlooked.

    1. Susan, I agree! Art stimulates parts of the brain that help us notice the little things.
