benefits of notebooking

Let's talk about notebooking.

I discovered notebooking in 2009. I've found it offers an array of benefits to my children and our homeschool. Today, I'd like to share a few of those benefits with you.

The 7 Best Benefits of Notebooking

What is notebooking?

Notebooking is the homeschool equivalent of journaling.

Throughout history, people have created journals or common books. Journaling is a great way to document thoughts and experiences. In a journal, you can write, draw, paint, and store keepsakes such as flowers, news clippings, or theater tickets.

Like journaling, notebooking allows your child to document knowledge, and save items related to his education.

Notebooks eliminate busywork.

Every human wants to feel his work has value. Your child does, too. Instead of doing page after page of boring worksheets, give him something creative and hands on!

With notebooking not only will your child be actively involved in his work, but he will also feel a sense of accomplishment, having created something which is uniquely his own!

A notebook is a reference tool.

Whenever your child needs to refer back to something, the information is right there in his notebooks. Whether he needs to recall a bit of information or refresh on some information, the information is at your child's fingertips!

Notebooking works with any learning style or homeschool method.

Whatever your homeschool choice is - eclectic, Charlotte Mason, unschooling or any other method - notebooking is a tool you can use.

Notebooks meet the needs of all types of learners from visual to kinesthetic. Notebooking allows a child to way that best suits him while still activating those other areas of the brain necessary for creating and retaining memories.

Notebooks are an evaluation tool.

Narration is an excellent tool for evaluation and notebooking is perfect for written narrations. Through your child's writings and drawings, you will be able to see exactly what he is learning.

By the same token, the absence of any information will tell you what he's not picking up during lessons.

Notebooks make great portfolios!

Whether you need to have samples available to meet state requirements, or you just want to have a personal record of your child's progress, notebooks fill the need.

You will easily be able to see the progress made from year to year!

Notebooking encourages independent learning.

As your child grows older, he will spend more time working independently. Notebooking is a perfect solo activity. Notebooking puts the learning in your child's hands.

Notebooks are a beautiful keepsake.

Your child's writings, drawings, paintings - all of these together create a scrapbook of your child's educational journey. What a wonderful thing to have down the road!

    1. Oh, Lisa! I'm so happy to hear that. Notebooking is fun. My kids look at it as art journaling (something else they do), but for homeschool lessons.
