Slow and Steady Wins the Race

I've not been able to blog regularly lately. There is a reason. I simply haven't had anything to tell you. As most of you know, work overtook me. It was a crazy, busy, bank-blasting sort of growth in my business. But it kept me away from the house for eight weeks. I finally have been able to stay home again but getting going after all that time "off" from school has been a challenge.

You see, I am a perfectionist of sorts. I am an "all or nothing" type. I like routines and schedules. I like being able to see something to the end. I don't like to start what I think I cannot finish and doing things in pieces and parts bugs me.

Because I was working so much, the girls sleep patterns got "off track". If you personally know me, then you know the girls have special needs... special challenges...that get their sleep patterns upside down. Out the window go the schedules and routines! I've been struggling to get them back on track but this particular disorder doesn't easily give in to such things.

Today, I decided to go with it. I've got to rearrange my thinking a little. What I cannot change, I must accept. At least for now. So I'm just going to read with them. If we do only reading for a while using our wonderful books from Heritage History, then at least knowledge is being imparted.

I also want Alexis to do the NaNoWriMo too. I've talked to her about it. Due to Dyslexia, she is not always inclined to read and writing by hand is a challenge. Still, she loves writing stories, even if it takes her longer and she can only do it via keyboarding.

For the next week or two, this is my only plan.
  • Get through some history books and see where that takes us.
  • Have Alexis write every day.
  • Have Lorelai read to me from her literature books.
  • Lorelai also loves playing her Erudition game, so I think we'll do that for 20 minutes a day, too.
Slow and steady wins the race. Sitting on the sidelines is just missing the fun.

How about you? Have you ever had to re-think your plan? Do a "lite" version of school? Have some event take over and keep you on the sidelines for a while?

Happy Homeschooling!

Yes, we're actually going through some of that right now. Since early September, right after we started our school year, someone has been sick at our house. At first their hacking coughs kept me up all night. Then I got sick, and stayed sick for a month. Our sleep schedules got messed up, so that my son is getting to sleep around midnight to 1 am and I am up at least until 2-4 am. Thus we're getting up later and since both of us are slow to get going in the mornings, we aren't getting much done. I am feeling a little better, but now the house is a wreck and we're on a bad schedule. So, I'm trying not to let it get me down. He is still getting some schoolwork done every day, we visited two elderly loved ones in the past couple of weeks, and we're slowly getting things done at home. Hopefully we will be back to "normal" soon...whatever that is, right? Glad to hear that you are plugging along as well. At least homeschooling affords us that opportunity. I think it would be even harder if I had to get him to public school right now.

  2. I agree. Some of the things that happen in life (at least in mine!) would not do us well if we were public schoolers. Can you imagine one of these polar bears trying to be at school at 7am? Omgosh..there's no way.

  3. My children are grown ups now , so my life is different. But for me, there is always something new to learn. Thanks for visiting and have a nice week end.
